Jersey, 1945. World War II has ended, yet Grace's husband has not returned. Alone in an isolated Victorian mansion on the island of Jersey, she raises her children according to strict religious rules. The children suffer from a strange condition: they cannot be exposed to direct daylight. Three new servants joining the household must learn a vital rule: the house must always remain in semi-darkness, and a door must never be opened unless the previous one has been closed. However, the strict order Grace has imposed will be challenged by circumstances beyond her control.
