When their parents leave home, five siblings between the ages of 8 and 14 are left in the care of their grandmother. The woman fears losing her house and distrusts strangers. She also claims to see the Devil and hears noises that no one else can. The children get into a conflict with some neighbors, and the fight ends with their dog dead. Thus, their fears trap them in the house, isolated from the world.
