In the 1970s, Sergio Méndez Arceo, Bishop of Cuernavaca, Mexico, confronted the traditional structures of the Catholic Church and even challenged Latin American dictatorships to pursue what he conceived as a spiritual revolution, aligned with humanist values and opposed to consumer society. The latest film by documentarian Francesco Taboada Tabone, director of The Last Zapatistas (2002), uses previously unseen archival footage and interviews with people who knew him to create a portrait of Méndez Arceo, a figure as luminous for Latin American leftist movements as he was uncomfortable for the region's political and economic power.
