The story takes place in 1939, just after the end of the Civil War. Carlos, a ten-year-old boy, arrives at an orphanage that houses the children of Republican victims. His presence disrupts the daily routine of the school, which is run by Carmen and where a teacher, Mr. Casares, sympathizes with the lost Republican cause. Furthermore, he finds himself haunted by the ghost of a former resident of the orphanage.
