Arthur Kipps has lived in terror since an experience he faced in his youth. The terrible events that have occurred must be told before an audience of family and friends, so he decides to write his story and seek the help of John Morris, a skeptical stage director, to guide him in properly interpreting his text. To do this, they meet at an old theater. The audience learns the preliminary details of the story and feels the atmosphere of London and the English countryside of the early 20th century. The story provokes nervous laughter that culminates in screams of outright terror and dread at the end, causing everyone to freeze in their seats amid the inexplicable phenomena they witness. Ultimately, it is the viewer who discovers that the legend of "The Woman in Black" goes beyond a theatrical fiction.
