The Ministry of Culture of Mexico City celebrates 50 years of the Arditti Quartet, the most important contemporary music ensemble in the world, within the framework of the second 2024 season of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra.
The legendary ensemble returns to Mexico to celebrate five decades of experience on Saturday, June 22 with the Arditti 50 program. Marathon of Contemporary Music at the Esperanza Iris City Theater, and on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, at the Sala Silvestre Revueltas, in a concert with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of the American Brad Lubman.
Regarding this special anniversary, the most important quartet on the contemporary music scene worldwide celebrates for three days, presenting the best of its repertoire at the Esperanza Iris City Theater on Saturday, June 22 at 7 p.m. This first program titled Arditti 50. Marathon of Contemporary Music, proposes an amazing selection of the quartet's favorite works, covering its most recognized repertoire, Mexican music and the premiere in our country of the transmedia work Everything is Important, with the participation of the visual artist Jennifer Walshe.
Meanwhile, on June 29 and 30, this renowned ensemble offers a second program together with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra through two concerts that are a historic event by presenting the Arditti Quartet for the first time in Mexico and Latin America. with an orchestra Maestro Brad Lubman is in charge of directing this meeting in the Sala Silvestre Revueltas of the Ollin Yoliztli Cultural Center, where the piece Fluss, by the multi-award-winning Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa, and the Quartet VI Hinterland by the French composer Pascal Dusapin, both works, have their premiere in Mexico. for string quartet and orchestra; in addition to the pieces Quartet No. 2 by György Ligeti, for solo string quartet; and the work for solo orchestra Recordare by Hilda Paredes.
Founded in 1974, by first violinist Irvine Arditti, the Arditti Quartet enjoys an international reputation for its refined and brilliant interpretations of contemporary music from the early 20th century to the present day. Hundreds of string quartets and countless chamber works have been written for him since his inception, which have given the Quartet a firm place in music history.
Over the past 30 years the group has received numerous awards for their work: the Deutsche Schallplatten Preis and the Gramophone Award, for best recording of contemporary music in 1999 (Elliott Carter), and in 2002 (Harrison Birtwistle). In 2004, he received the “Coup de Coeur” award from the Charles Cross Academy in France for his exceptional contribution to the dissemination of contemporary music. In 1999, he was awarded the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize for his lifetime achievements in music. To this day, it is the only group to have received this award.
